Overview

I worked on the risk profiling flow in BNI Mobile Banking’s investment section. The flow helps users understand their investment risk profile through a short quiz, then recommends suitable product categories based on their answers.

My role was to make the experience feel clear, supportive, and trustworthy for beginner investors. I focused on turning financial concepts such as risk, goals, and product categories into plain language that users could understand and act on.

Problem space

For many users, investing feels intimidating before they even choose a product. The challenge was not only to explain what a risk profile is, but to help users feel confident enough to complete the quiz and continue exploring investment options.

Without clear guidance, users could misinterpret the questions, feel unsure about their answers, or leave the flow before reaching the recommendation.

User needs

Users needed to know three things clearly.

  • What the quiz is for
  • How to answer each question without financial expertise
  • What their result means and what to do next

The copy needed to guide users without overwhelming them, especially within the limited space of a mobile banking app.

Content strategy

I structured the content around confidence and progression. Each screen had one clear job, from setting expectations, helping users answer, to explaining the result.

I used plain language, consistent terminology, and short supportive descriptions to reduce uncertainty. On the result screen, I framed profile labels such as conservative, moderate, or aggressive as guidance rather than judgement, so users could understand their investment style without feeling discouraged.

Key writing challenges

  • Explaining financial risk in a way that felt accurate but not intimidating
  • Keeping the quiz short while still giving enough context
  • Making abstract terms like risk profile and investment category feel useful
  • Writing for mobile screens where every word needed to earn its place
  • Keeping the tone supportive, trustworthy, and appropriate for a banking product

Outcome

The final content made the risk profiling flow easier to understand and more actionable for first time investors. Users could see why the quiz mattered, answer with more confidence, and understand how their result connected to recommended investment products.

The flow helped make BNI’s investment section feel more approachable, while supporting product discovery and encouraging users to take the next step with greater confidence.
